Kiwis Finish Seventh The Rip Curl New Zealand Junior Surfing Team have finished seventh at the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship completed today (Thursday 28th January). The event has taken place at Piha Beach, New Zealand over the past eight days with a classic mix of stormy West Coast weather and perfect sunshine and pumping waves. The surf remained around the 1.0m mark throughout the day. With the full tide in the morning, the surfers utilised the inside righthanders in the middle of Piha Beach. As the tide went out the surfers shifted the! ir attention over to the lefthanders of the Piha Bar. Kiwis had their chances to march up the ratings table on the final day of the event but fell short early in the morning when they lost their final two surfers Ben Poulter (Rag) in the Under 16 Boys Repechage Semifinal and Sarah Mason in the Under 18 Girls Repechage Round 7. Poulter was the highest placed Kiwi placing sixth overall in the Under 16 Boys Division. Yeah stoked, definitely a better result than I thought I was going to get commented Poulter post heat. After slashing his foot open late on Tuesday, the young surfer had to compete with a coating of numbing gel to ease the pain but he was quick to push that aside as a reason for his loss My foot was sore but I had some numbing gel and I put that on it so it was fine, it didnt hurt during the heat said Poulter. Poulter had two chances to progress through to the final this morning but placed third in his first heat after surfing to a 12.02 point heat total (out of a possible 20). He got a wave in the dying seconds of the heat requiring 5.72 to progress through to the final. It wasnt until he was back on the beach surrounded by his team members that the scores were read out as 5.60, agonisingly short of an incredible podium finish for the young Raglan surfer. Yeah I dont know how to describe that loss. It sucked, I dont know, it was so close I dont know any other way to describe it. Poulter refocused and was back in action less than 40 minutes later with a last ditch effort to make the finals. This time around Poulter (10.50) was out-performed by his counterparts from Koa Smith, HAW (14.46), Jake Halstead, USA (12.62) and Kolohe Andino, USA (11.00). Sarah Mason finished in eighth overall in the Under 18 Girls Division. I am really happy to get eighth. I would have liked to do bett! er but I am happy because this is my first time around said Mason who added I want to come back and compete in this event and do the best I can and hopefully win a title before I move up a division. Mason has another three years left in the Under 18 Girls. The 14-year-olds performance in the second heat of the day was do-or-die and she ultimately placed fourth. Mason scored 10.76 compared with Lakey Peterson, USA (16.34), Alessa Quizon, HAW (15.80) and Canelle Bulard, FRA (12.50). There were some good waves in the morning for my heat, it was real fun, I just was simply not in sync with the best waves commented Mason on loss. It is the first time a major International Surfing Association event has been held in New Zealand. New Zealand also finished seventh in 2009 when the event was held in Ecuador. 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship - Day 2 Completed In Wild Seas It was like victory at sea in Piha today, with the second day of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship getting underway in stormy 6ft (1.5-2m) plus waves in New Zealand. Earlier in the day, contest organisers opted to put the day’s action on hold for three hours with wild weather lashing the main contest site. After a delayed start, the Under 18 boys qualifying round two competitors battled large seas and strong winds in the race for all-important round three berths. Local star Alex Dive (Mt Maunganui) kept his countrys hope of a gold medal alive in the third heat of the day, finishing behind Brazilian star Gabriel Medina to book a spot in round three. In a see-sawing affair, Medina took an early lead with a 6.67 wave. Dive hit back netting two scoring waves (4.83 and 6.17) to take over the lead. But Medina wasnt finished executing three carving manoeuvre before finishing with a critical white-water floater to snare a heat-winning 8.00 ride. Medinas 14.67 total was the highest combined heat total of the morning. 17-year old Dive said he was relieved to get through to the next round of competition. It was really tough to get in the right spot, he said. It was all over the show out there. I knew where to sit, having surfed here a little bit over the years. Luckily for me something came through. The former U/16 New Zealand champion added that he was enjoying competing in his own country. Its so cool. Ive had so much attention from the media, which I dont usually get because were usually competing in other countries. So its good for me and the New Zealand team. French ripper Kieran Bulard (Reunion Island) was the days top individual wave scorer, despite finishing behind Portugals Frederico Morais. Its the second time that the Frenchman has competed for his country. It was good to get through, said Bulard. I got a good wave at the beginning and then I paddled back out to get to the line-up and got no more waves for the rest of the heat. I was really stressed. But it was good I passed through that heat into the next round. Post heat, Bulard said his heat-high 8.50 wave felt good. I just paddled hard and came into a double-up section and made a good turn. Then I made a good bottom turn before a carve offthe-top, then another turn. They were three really good turns. Australian ace Tim macdonald (North Stradbroke Island), 17, inflicted the biggest upset of the day; beating newly-crowned ASP World Junior champion Maxime Huscenot (France, Reunion Island) and defending ISA World Junior champion Keanu Aising (Hawaii) in the opening heat of the day. The young Australian said his win was a shot of confidence. I feel so good right now, said macdonald. But out there you never really know who is going to get through. The conditions were tough and Im glad I got through. Other round two winners included Ian Gouveia (Brazil), Evan Geiselman (USA), Ian Fontaine (France), Evan Thompson (USA), Thomas Woods (Coolangatta, AUS) and Tamaroa mccomb (Tahiti). Competition is expected to continue tomorrow with qualifying round two Under 16 boys and repercharge one Under 16 Boys scheduled for the main podium and repercharge one and two of the Under 18 boys planned for podium two.
